It’s a Wonderful Life
by Paul McCann .
The harbour lights they shone down on a town fast asleep
and the sound of the winds around me
and there’s no place to go so I walk through the snow
and I’m trying to keep warm through the night .
Lying down in the city with the dogs at my feet
and they don’t ask anything from me just my silent company
until the early morning light and they don’t bite or want to fight with me .
Lying there at the station with the rats around me
and the city is a cold old place to be ,
but the rats they don’t care as they scurry here and there
and they try hard to keep away from me
There’s no welcome mats for scary dogs and hairy rats
and its a merciless life on the streets
for people like me who you’ll never see
and it’s a wonderful life after all .
It’s a wonderful life yes its cuts like a knife
and I won’t let it get the best of me ,
yes it’s a wonderful life
and my only advice
is to accept how everything must be .
Lying there on the grass ‘
wshing the night it would pass
and its dangerous life on the streets of Belfast
but the dogs and rats around Unity Flats
they’ve got no problem lying next to me .
