Visitors Around The Campfire
By Paul McCann
In a dry parched land he worked hard with his bare hands drilling holes into the earth with a petrol driven auger for posts that would be inserted about two feet into the hole .
It was a large station in the outback with no pub where he could get a cool drink at the bar .
He couldn’t shower or have a bath and the nearest creek was four hours drive where hungry crocs would sit on the banks of the creek waiting for some bush picnickers to come for a cool dip.
He brought enough supply’s to last him until he had finished digging the three hundred holes
and was used to getting dusty and dirty with all the years he spent sheep shearing and dipping around the outback .
He was used to being covered by sweat so a week without a having bath wasn’t new to him .
He was nick named Trevor leather jacket because he was as tough as an old boot with skin as rough as guts .
Even though Trevor had an RV he still liked to sleep with the moon at night underneath the stars .
He felt sorry for the people who lived In the cities and all the business men who worried about their turn overs and investments .
Each day after work was done Trevor lit the campfire and hung up a cooking pot over the flames and cooked some up some stew for dinner . After he ate he took out a bottle of moonshine and his fiddle and filled the air with music and smoke that drifted up to the moon .
Hall drunk on moonshine Trevor kept playing his fiddle for no one but himself .
In the outback he wound often see strange shapes wandering around .,He thought nothing of it and wrote it off as being delusional on moonshine .
The Australian sky was always brightly lit with stars at night and often things would plummet down from above . Space junk or comets but this particular night half drunk on moonshine he saw a spaceship land nearby .
The next thing he knew he was surrounded by immigrants , or as they called themselves aliens .
Trevor still used the name immigrants when he spoke to them “So what you doing here ,
are you trying to makes this place your home .?
The small group of visitors shrieked in a high pitch murmuring away as Trevor continued ,
“ You’re in the lucky country now , we’re got Irish , Slavic's , Spaniards , Asians , Greek ,
Hindu’s , English and Germans , so there’s always room for some more immigrants . We’re all like present day pioneers “
The visitors continue shrieking away and Trevor kept on ranting .
“ We are all Australians here so if you’re going to stay you may as well be one of us too “
They looked at Trevor as he handed them his bottle of moonshine but they hadn’t a clue what to do with it .
Trevor was getting a bit upset and said ,
“What’s the matter , here have drink “
The visitors returned to their spaceship and took off at speed into the sky .
Trevor looked up and said
“Good riddance . If you can’t fit in it’s better you would ship out .”
He lay down with the moon and watched shooting stars teachers the sky . In the morning
the fire had gone out and he wondered to himself ,
“ Was I moonshine dreaming or not . It doesn’t really matter anyhow . I’ve got holes to dig and tunes to play .”
The End
