SPEAKING STARLING
© mmSeason
Silent I watch the stirring starlings
Still in my seat I hear their clamour
up in the tree top
careless of me at the root.
How far apart we are.
On the eve of migration
they broadcast the importance of their move
a noisy signal like SETI
possessed by decision they take off
off in an instant
no need to debate direction
then emboldened by doubts
perhaps apprehension? they press
close in a huddle anticipating
going forward together
way above the day-to-day world.
They know how
and they have forgotten
last autumn
and have no thought of next.
