MARBLES

in youth, i carried marbles
in a little yellow bag
i'd challenge other children
and their marbles i would snag
.
i thought i'd lose my marbles
when i entered middle age
i would challenge all opinions
and would rattle every cage
.
my body is now marbled
by the ravages of time
what happened to the days that lacked
a reason or a rhyme
.
in youth, i played some hopscotch
i was nimble, fleet of foot
i'd still be dancing wildly
while my playmates were caput
.
in middle age, at five o' clock
my business day would stop
that's when i would require some scotch
so, to the bar, i'd hop
.
no longer do i need that scotch
my throat, i never scorch
now i'm content with lemonade
while lazing on my porch
.
in youth, i'd grab a partner
for a simple game of catch
the spheroid sailing through the air
while arms and legs, i'd stretch
.
in time, i'd only catch a cold
or maybe catch a train
commuting to a daily job
that only caused me pain
.
now i can hardly catch my breath
and how i miss my youth
when hopscotch, catch and marbles
were a pure and simple truth
