THE SINKING LIBRARY

there's a place out in wyoming
long ago a wild west town
in old boot hill were outlaws, killed
and laid beneath the ground
but space is for the living
and so soon it was behooved
to use that space for things of grace
so tombstones were removed
they sought to build a library
to feed their young folks' minds
the tombstones gone, they built upon
the outlaws left behind
they did some testing of the soil
the metamorphic state
the experts found this restless ground
would stand the building's weight
and so the edifice was built
so grand it was in looks
but the weight they set, one can't forget
was not when filled with books
and books are rather heavy
several pounds may weigh a tome
these hefty things, unbalance brings
when gathered in one home
the building started sinking
to the horror of them all
oh what a flop, they couldn't stop
the progress, even stall
now some folks say that outlaws
had a mind to read a bit
and in due course they used their force
where tombstones used to sit
now i like ghostly stories
and in western towns they breed
but i don't think that buildings sink
so outlaws, dead, can read
in a town out in wyoming
and don't give me funny looks
there's an empty shack with miles of racks
devoid of any books
