TENTH LIFE OF A CAT

a marquee on a theater
my name was ten feet tall
the multitudes explored my moods
an idol, loved by all
a stratopsheric rocket
with an afterburner, fat
now sucked into a vacuum
like the tenth life of a cat
a photo in a magazine
displayed my smiling face
tan and smooth and beautiful
a hair not out of place
each hand thrust out to touch me
at all homes, a welcome mat
and now i'm nonexistent
like the tenth life of a cat
a voice that warbled rhapsodies
inside a microphone
a warm vibrato tour-de-force
displaying richest tones
a bullet in the record charts
on top of things i sat
now memories and mumbles
like the tenth life of a cat
the toast of every party
i was kept all buttered up
and when i told an anecdote
what laughter would erupt
but now just echoes linger
i am quite bereft of chat
i'm residue at best here
like the tenth life of a cat
