Zest (IP)

Always it started the same way
Blame begat blame begat blame
"Call a spade a spade," she'd spit,
Deal a blow did he.
Everything seemed fine a few days hence
Forgiven and forgotten
Gay flowers with scent so free
Holding back before the children
Injuries hidden from the neighbours
Joshing with her mum
Keeping it in before Saturday night
Love hidden from her memory
Mumming for his mates
November came, November went
On and on she nagged/he bragged
Please don't hurt the children
Quietly work away your shame.
Realising the sorry mess for what it was
Sought they help but found it wanting
Terrible the wanting
Unravelling. What once was so very free
Voices unrecognized by agencies
Without teeth.
'X' went from the post-its on the 'fridge.
Youth of long-departed gone from memory
Zest gone. Only bitter pith remains.
