When I was very small
I was surrounded by it
Grew up with it inside me
You are what you eat
Too young to understand
but I felt the vibe
My parents liked the music
Enjoyed the smoky cabaret
But didn't like long hair
Pot and naked hippies
Just saw Black & White
and miners' strikes
Wilson on the telly
Paraffin heaters on the stairs
People missed The War
I missed everything
Except Jimmy Clitheroe
and Land of the Giants
Grey checked school shorts
and short back and sides
Buses with conductors
and doors at the back
Downtown on the radio
Headscarves in the street
It came and went
I learned about it later
Filled the gaps with imagination
and a record player
