Recital

Magritte’s sky overhead again
Across the lawn the curtains are closed
A TV comedy
Light entertainment
The Auguries play to a scene of unsupportable grief
Beneath the sky I join the pointless dots:
From Wind to The Disquieting Muses
de Chirico to Room 203
Agosto to characteristically pale July
Plath reads her Muses in clipped privileged tones
Hammer-spring cocked and latched
My mother’s tentative limp up the path
She hedges around her loneliness
Bemused by the crystal recital
Incurious
Something on the dangers of being outside
I smile and ply her with bromides
Hear her retreating shuffle
The tragic click of the door
The Levante burns my skin
Dorada gasp on the foreshore
Eye fixed to a deadening sky
Guilt has arrived to soothe me
He brings the trepan close
Invited guests and onlookers
Pay close attention
Mesdames et messieurs: The stone of madness

This made my chest ache in
This made my chest ache in recognition. The ache of sadness or guilt for me that I have felt before has something to do with the acceptance part of it, somehow, or acceptance because of a sense of the inescapable, don't know if that makes sense. Anyway, I thought this was moving and beautifully written, and full of interesting references.
