A Boon, I Ask For
P K Routray
My early days’ memory
listening to many a story
on God and His power,
teachings from scripture
propitiation and prayer
instilled within me a conception
on God, the father of this creation.
But with seventy years’ experiences and experimentations
to ninety percent theistic and ten percent atheistic have turned my perceptions.
Once an idea struck me, of God to take an examination
to remove this late developed ten percent atheistic perception
Meditated, contemplated, propitiated I on Him with austerity
to please God and get Him to grant me a boon and prove His authority.
So that with conviction I can be a preacher to remove atheistic nuisance,
and at the final judgment, Jesus will plead for my Heaven ward movement.
To my awe and surprise God graced me with His benign presence
and offered me, He a boon being satisfied by my penance.
Instantly asked I to become a monarch with a gigantic kingdom.
Expressed God “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, says the age old wisdom.”
To my subsequent prayer for a treasury full of wealth
“Someone, may be your enemy, will be the owner of them after your death”
changing my decisions second time on His explanations I asked for immortality
“With ill health, with old age, no friends, no relatives to live, life will be dull, drab and void of beauty”.
Getting puzzled and convinced by His logic, so clear and so true
Asked I “Bless me God with whatever you think best for me, ultimately I surrender to you.”
My earthly wisdom enlightened by divine logic prompted me for this submission
Happenings forced contrary to His plan disturb the symphony of creation.
In all these thoughts, wisdom and logic my atheism got its burial
behind every atheism lies also His power for man’s survival.

This is lovely. I guess the spiritual world out there is somewhere we are often scared to confront, but your poem does it beautifully.
