HAPPINESS – A challenge
P K Routray
Happiness is an emotional feeling of joy and jubilation,
It enlivens the spirit and is only to be felt and there is no word for expression
Eye sees, ear hears, nose smells,
Similarly emotion conveys the feeling of happiness to the mind with help of nerves and brain cells.
Propelled by memory, ego and intellect,
With spirit of consciousness Mind feels the effect
Thus is the complex mechanism of human life as this author knows.
With this as back drop the deliberation on happiness follows.
Happiness is obtained in two ways,
Positive and negative this author says.
One is absolute and the second is relative,
Spontaneous is absolute, relative has a motive. Absolute happiness is felt at the cost of none,
Relative happiness comes at the cost of many or a single person.
Absolute happiness may be termed as peace and bliss,
They develop in a man whose soul merges with god, the fact you cannot dismiss.
Relative happiness comes out of comparison and jealousy,
Pain and sorrow have to come with it hand in gloves you have to agree.
To cite an example of relative happiness,
I draw your attention to the praise for our poem’s success,
This comparison has an element of individual ego,
We take pride and pleasure scoring over friends or foe.
Ego has major role to play for this happiness,
As ego is inherent for individuals’ existence, our attempt to dispense with this happiness will have no success.
By way of practice with penance and austerity,
We only can take our mind to partial divinity.
Hence this happiness stays with sorrow and pain hence none is to blame,
The absolute happiness is hard to come, but comes with peace and bliss as I claim.
These statements are put forth for deliberation as a challenge,
The author humbly requests for wisdom’s message.
