JANMASTAMI
Edited by: P K Routray
The title of the poem may sound strange,
In India it is the same in all of her sixteen official language.
One billion people in this world know it by this name,
Hence I did not deviate and wanted all to accept the same.
To-day it is the birth day of Lord Krishna, the dark Hindu God as He is known,
It was God’s immediate past incarnation of Dwapara aeon.
It is the day of Janmastami when Lord took the human form,
Hence He had to take birth, spend all His life like a man as per human norm.
To- day lord was born at midnight, when except his parents and grand papa, all were immersed in deep slumber,
On a basket as head load to his father under the umbrella of a snake, He was taken from Mathura to Gopapur
As per Hindu philosophy, universe and beyond function in certain rhythm,
Following certain rule, the sun and moon come and go so also the stars in the sky gleam.
Every item in this universe has a property and a task, each has to perform,
But if by any means it gets disturbed, to restore the order Almighty God has to assume a form.
To destroy the evil doers and to protect the righteous,
So that the rhythm of all are put on right course to restore universal chorus.
One such occasion arose, when the earth got dominated by the demons,
To restore the rhythm Lord decided to be born among the humans.
Kamsa a demon king was the monarch among Demons,
He represented all evils and became the kingpin of all evil actions.
Lord decided to come as a eighth child of his cousin sister to end his reign,
The news reached the king of Demons, for his imminent death Kamsa was afraid and shaken.
Immediately he put his cousin and her husband behind bars,
He killed first six children born in prison immediately after birth of theirs.
Seventh child got transferred from the womb of Devaki, to the womb of Rohini as an embryo transfer quite intriguing, He was born as Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother Powerful and dashing.
It is worth mentioning that conception then was not only male female union,
It was also possible like modern Surrogate motherhood by embryo transplantation.
Krishna came as the eighth child and secretly transferred to Nanda and Yasoda to accept them as his father and mother at Gopapur.
A girl child born to Yasoda at the same time was taken to Debaki as if in exchange offer.
In this short poem, I am forced to skip many incidents with their if and but,
Many details, devotionally pleasing, with symbolic meaning are skipped but I am keeping my mouth shut.
Lord Krishna showed many miracles as a baby newly born,
Killed many demons embodiment of anger, geed, ignorance, lust and passion.
His infancy and child hood spent in Gopapur are full of frolic and fun,
His each activity is symbolic and needs volumes for elaboration.
The greatest epic of Hindu religion with eighteen thousand verses in Sanskrit,
With each Sanskrit word combining with many could hardly describe about Him and His play in its script.
He reciprocated the love of a mother, love of a friend and love of his eternal lover,
All types of loves and devotion, his play did vividly cover.
If you talk of his glory, listen to the same,
Devotion will spring forth from your heart and with you He will always remain.
A mother always glorifies her child out of intense love,
Love tops all Heavenly qualities and is a boon from Above.
He grew up at Gopapur with all his child’s play,
He shifted to Brindaban for his role in adolescence amidst cattles and friends, his love for them to defray.
Then came to Mathura and killed kamsa, and spent a part of his youth in mirth,
He then settled at Dwaraka and made it His abode till he left the earth.
He preached Gita to Arjuna and Udhab his most favoured men, to bring back love, truth and purity to make this earth, Heaven,
We are supposed to follow, practice and always remember these preaching’s for peace bliss and live happily ever.
Hindu philosophy is based on faith, Greek’s on logic,
They are great in their philosophy, we must believe.
Strong faith and evidence are there on Krishna’s birth, He lived like us and became our own on this earth.
We celebrate His birth day with joy and jubilation,
As on incarnation of God we show our devotion.
Hindus have their own calendar differing from Gregorian,
As per their lunar year and lunar month Krishna was born.
In the lunar month of Bhadrav on the eighth day of the waning fortnight.
He was born in the prison of Kamsa at the dead of the night.
On this eighth day of month as per the Hindu almanc every year
Krishna ‘Janmastami’ meaning Krishna’s birth on the eighth day is celebrated with devotion and fanfare.
So the birthday with month will vary as per English calendar
Please refer to the proper calendar to observe the day year after year.
