THE PAST IS A MONSTER

The past is a dark haired monster
with angry teeth
and vicious claws,
and an appetite
for presents and futures
frightening, terrifying
in its vastness.

The past
is a wounded monster
refusing to lie down
and die,
refusing to become a ghost
of frail, frail,
frail memory.

The past is a jealous
creature
with a broken, bruised ego,
its breaths becoming
more laboured
with every passing present
settling on its vast shoulders.

The past is a mournful
monster,
with no voice
nor ability
to express its sadness
as it fades, fades,
fades
into dark corners,
its body scarred and wounded,
wounded and scarred
between the eager teeth
of tomorrows.

The past is a dying monster,
dying, dying,
and a part of us
is always dying with it
too.
