God Said To Me

When I was young,
and pretty
and blue-eyed,
God said to me,
"Child,
you go out into the world,
and show them you're more than
just a pretty smile."

And when I was a teenager,
gawky,
and ugly,
God said to me,
"Now, child,
you go out into the world,
and show them you're
a beauty."

And when I was just out of college,
Depressed,
and alone,
God said to me,
"Now, child,
you go out into the world,
and show them you can
always smile."

And when I was married, with kids,
Happy,
and stressed out,
God said to me,
"Now, child,
you go out into the world,
and show them you can
be better than what you are."

And when I was old,
and afraid of death,
and grumpy,
God said to me,
"Now, child,
you go out into the world,
and show them you're
afraid of nothing."

And when I was at death's door,
and that light was getting brighter,
and I wasn't afraid,
God said to me,
"Now, child,
what are you doing?
Go show them you can live through anything."
