Watching

Only drink can save you now
You turn to the bottle
Like you used to turn to me
Smiling
Insanely
Like it’s all you could hope for
You don’t realise
Can never realise
What I’m going through
Watching
Just watching you pour you life down the sink with the coffee I made you
When will you wake me up
Remind me it’s a dream
Tell me I was just being foolish
Innocence, life
Where did it all go?
As I watch you now, tears pouring down my face
I can’t help thinking of all the things you could have been
Could have done
I remember the first race you won
When you came first in the school Olympics
That time you carried the medal and had your photo taken with the mayor
Now, that means nothing
They wouldn’t even recognise you
Your worn body and face which is overcome
By a blankness
It’s all they’d see
But I can see past that
See you as you were
See you as what you could be
If you only gave yourself that chance
