Chapter 2 – The Search
Balance was sleeping peacefully; dreaming of things long past and hoping one day he would wake up to find he was living in the world he dreams about. He awoke with a start; slightly disorientated he looked around to see what had awoken him. There was no one and nothing around, he then realised what it was…the connection. It had been forged. He had to find the people that would become legends, he got up and dressed and began to rush around, muttering to himself and shoving all kinds of things into a rucksack. He realised he was packing stuff he didn’t need and cursing angrily he unpacked and started to repack, concentrating this time. He packed: clothing, cooking utensils and pots, food, water and some personal items he couldn’t stand to be parted from. He hadn’t been far from his home in 3000 years and had to mentally prepare himself for leaving, once he had done this he looked around, memorising everything. He turned his back and walked to the door, he glanced around one more time, he shut the door behind him, not knowing if he will ever return.
Purge was pacing in his throne room when the connection was made. He was very excited and immediately sent out scout parties to find the ones he wanted. He knew this could be his time, if he could find the boy and girl then he could finally have what was taken from him all those years ago. He didn’t want anyone destroying this chance. He knew Balance would try and that he would also be searching for the boy and girl. Purge had to gain power this time, he felt that Balance didn’t deserve his powers; this is the reason that he had instructed his men to kill the wizard if they come across him. Balance’s death would give Purge all of Balance’s powers. He began to picture where Balance didn’t exist and where he ruled, everyone would bow to his command or suffer the consequences. Even the two most powerful people to have ever lived would do his bidding. He smiled despite himself.
Mia and Gage were also being searched for by two very rare creatures, these creatures haven’t been seen since the Great Wizard War. Quill and Scorch were brother and sister, they were also dragons. Quill was a deep purple with bright blue eyes. She looked at her brother, who was emerald green with gold eyes,
“Scorch, pay attention”, Quill scolded. She was only older by a few minutes but she was very bossy towards Scorch.
“But Quill, we have been looking for ages, can’t we take a break?” he looked at her with his smouldering eyes.
She sighed,
“As soon as we find a place to rest, remember Scorch it needs to be a secluded place”.
Quill and Scorch swooped down in to a field and grabbed two cows each; they flew, holding their meal in their claws. They finally landed in a clearing surrounded by trees. They ate their meal and waited for daylight to break. They did not want to travel in the day because they didn’t want to be caught or even seen. Some people did not like dragons because of the part they played in the Great Wizard War. Quill lied down and closed her eyes, thinking. She was interrupted by Scorch,
“Quill?”
“What is it Scorch?” She turned towards him, his eyes had turned darker which was a sign that he was very angry or worried.
“When do you think we will find the people we are looking for? What if they don’t react to us the way we hope?” Quill was right, he was worried. Quill was also worried about these things but all she said was
“Don’t worry; it will all work out right. Get some sleep.” She closed her eyes again, signalling the end of the conversation. She heard Scorch sigh and lie down, he was soon sleeping peacefully.
Quietly, so he did not wake them Balance crept past the sleeping dragons. He had been hoping to see them and he had watched them land in this clearing. He knew they were looking for the same thing as him. He wanted to talk to them, for this reason he had come prepared with two cows. He sat across the clearing from the dragons and waited for them to awaken. He knew the scent and noise coming from the cows would eventually wake them up. He lit a fire and began to make a soup whilst he waited. He was just about to eat his soup when one of the dragons began to stir. It turned towards him, its bright blue eyes narrowing slightly. It stood, it wasn’t a fully grown dragon but it was still very intimidating. Balance began to talk, he was nervous and stuttered slightly,
“I…I…I’m Balance the wizard, I was hoping we could talk about something that is important to us both.” The dragon just glared at him, it then turned and nudged the other dragon with its claw.
“Scorch, wake up”, Quill commanded.
“What is it? Did you get breakfast?” he asked groggily, sniffing the air.
“No, but the wizard did.” Scorch stood up immediately, all signs of tiredness vanishing. Balance realised this dragon was taller than the other, he was also aware that it was the other one that was in charge. He began to speak to them both, slightly more confident.
“I haven’t come to expose you, or harm you. I would like to talk to you.” He offered them the cows and turned away whilst they ate. He cringed when he heard the snapping of bones but kept his back turned and waited patiently.
The dragons ate and spoke quietly. They were discussing whether they could trust him or not, they had been betrayed by a wizard in the past. Finally Quill decided they would listen to what he had to say. She turned to the wizard,
“We will listen to what you have to say, we do not promise to agree to anything and if that is the case we go our separate ways peacefully, do you understand?” Balance turned back towards them and smiled.
Quill and Scorch sat and waited for the wizard to begin. Balance resumed his seat and began to eat his soup, talking between mouthfuls. He told them who he was looking for; he knew they were looking for them to. He then proposed that they travel together. Both dragons listened patiently whilst he told them what he wanted to find these two people for, he wanted to train them, protect them and help them understand who they are. In time he wanted them to save the world. After he had finished talking about these two people he told them all about Purge. He finally finished his story, Quill began to speak.
“We know who Purge is, he killed our mother.” She looked at Scorch who nodded, she carried on.
“We will travel with you.” Balance smiled,
“We need to make preparations then.” However just as he said this he was attacked from behind and sent spiralling crashing into a tree next to Scorch. He was dazed and struggled to get up.
“Well look what we have here boys, Drake sneered. He was Purge’s right hand man and could not believe he had just run into the wizard. However the chance to kill the wizard was quickly slipping through his fingers. Scorch had reached for Balance and scooped him up in his claw. He was taking flight followed closely by Quill. She had Balance’s rucksack in her mouth. They landed in a clearing and Scorch laid Balance flat.
Quill growls “Well, we know that Purge is also scouting the land.”
Meanwhile, Drake is cursing at his men,
“How could you let him get away? You should have just shot the dragons with your crossbows. We could have had the wizard and Purge would be that pleased we could have asked for anything. You lot are idiots.”
