“Sorry,
should have already done that, kinda new to this.” He said stepping back,
giving her space to regain her composure.
“What,” she
asked, “new, new to what, what are you.”
“Ah, just a
guy whose here to help.” That sounded way too cheesy to him and quite familiar.
He’d work on his catch phrases later.

“He, he
grabbed me, he, he, hit me, and tried
to…”
“I’m so
sorry you had to go through this. Look, I need to get you to a doctor, and I
need to call the police.”
“My car, in
my car…”
“Your
phone?”
“Yeah, yes.”
“Didn’t see
a car, but I was looking for you, must’ve missed it. He probably hid it.”
“Who are
you, how, how did you find me, save me?”
“I’m Ss..”
he caught himself, “I’m I’m, ah ohh, Earth, man, gosh that’s lame, call me
Earthman, if, if, you don’t mind.”
“Ah nooo, if
that’s who you are, that’s fine with me.”
“Did, did,
did he hurt you, you know like that.” He could feel his face burn, first bit of
pain he felt all night.
She grunted,
“no, huh, he couldn’t, that’s when he really lost it.”
“Can you
walk?”
“Yeah I
think so,” she tried to sit up and groaned, “my rib, he broke it.”
“Please, do
not move. I’m going to find your car and call for help. I’ll be right outside.”
“Guess
that’s all right, its just so dark, can’t see anything. Don’t really want to
sit here in the dark. Could you find the light? I’m being silly, I know.”
“No, no
you’re not.”
“There’s a rest
room, toward the back. He was there for a while. It has a light. He turned it
off when he heard you.”
“He should
have run. You know, I didn’t mean to kill him. Well maybe a little.”
“Yeah well,
he was a monster. I’m glad he’s dead.”
He smiled
and headed toward the back.
“Hey, you
must have cat eyes.” She yelled at him through the darkness.
“Yeah,
something like that.”
“Thank you.”

He looked
back at her and smiled knowing full well she couldn’t see it. Her face was marred
with bruises and tear streaked make up. But she was still beautiful. He turned
back headed for the bathroom. Happy the beast that did that to her was dead and
gone.
The garage
had no power, but the wannabe rapist had left a LED lamp sitting on the
bathroom floor. It’s blinding glare completely hid his face as he carried it to
her. Careful to keep his back turned he sat the lamp down on the seat.
“Trying to
keep your secret identity a secret?” She asked.
“I know
lame, but not a bad idea.”
“Yeah, sure,
of course.”
He could
hear disappointment in her voice. “Okay if I keep in touch, Kathy.”
“You know my
name.”
“You were on
the news, missing person. ‘Cept you’re not missing anymore.”
“My poor
family they must be worried sick.”
I’ll find
your phone and fix that as soon as I can.”
“My pass code
is 2476.”
“Thanks, I
won’t be long.”
Behind the
building briers and underbrush had pretty much taken over, but not so much that
he couldn’t spot a large hump of tarp sticking up like a big blue mountain. Her
car, a gray Honda lay beneath it. Her phone was on the passenger seat. The driver
side door was unlocked, keys dangled from the ignition.
He had no
trouble finding her parents number. He called them, then 911 then opened the
garage door and raced back to her, phone in hand. All thought of hiding his face
was wiped away by his concern for her.
She smiled
at him. His handsome silhouette barely visible in the dying lamp’s dull glow.
“How did you
find me, really…” She asked. “I want to know.”
“Powers,” He
put his hand over his mouth, as if trying to filter the truth, “I got powers,
alien powers. I know that helps, right?”
She somehow
managed a weak chuckle. He smiled, marveled at her strength and wondered what
exactly she was laughing at, his words or him, not that it mattered. Blue
lights suddenly flashed against the wall. He flew out the open garage door with
a great rush of wind that made her hair flap and stream across her face,
disappearing quicker than he appeared.
