“Cool” or warm?

or, are teens really serious about their concerns about fossil fuels/emission/pollution?

“Jumpers aren’t ‘cool’”;
but they’re warm
– fleece or wool,
and can help you turn
the stat a little lower,
or switch the electric blower,
off for a while.

“I’m gonna vote green,”
but can’t be seen
in an anorak or mack;
if I get wet because it rain,
Mum will switch the dryer on again –
she doesn’t worry if the bills
get higher,
and far-off barren hills
sprout humming turbine-forest frills
(electric power-production ‘mills’)
or that they burn more fossil fuel
just to help our teens keep ‘cool’,
get dry, and warm, and they can claim
that industry take all the blame.

Let your shoulders bear the weight
of the dogma you relate
clothes aren’t just to decorate,
they can help us moderate
our consumption,
and pollution.

lol. As you well know, Rhiannonw, teens aren't always the most logical of beings. I've been through it with my own son. Really enjoyed this.

Glad you enjoyed it, Rosalind. I never want to force rhymes, but I like to use them to make the message snappy and catchy if they seem appropriate, like alliteration, but, of course at best they shouldn't be noticed particularly then. This was a bit of fun to try to catch a fairly serious subject in a humorous way. Rhiannon

Lot of peer pressure has always gone on, Tina! I remember long ago, saying, 'Well we havent got a tumble dryer, and it is a nuisance if you come home with lots of dripping clothes!' We had young ones aswell as teenagers! Thanks for reading. Rhiannon

I liked the message behind this - and not only the teens need to get the message.

I have solar panels, and have become much more green jthan I used to be.

Yes, it's easy to be inconsistent, - we're not going to conquer these problems totally in this world, but we should be careful, and certainly  not just throw accusations at others. I often get frustrated about the thin garments in all weathers, and turn the heating on, but I guess peer pressure is difficult! Rhiannon

Rhiannon, jumpers aren't cool. they are supposed to be warm! I have an 18 year old who dresses in the current show a lot of flesh fashion and I have to nag her to put a sweatshirt on. It's about not wasting the earth's resources and it's also about not wasting Mum's money on excessive fuel bills.  Nice little poem that makes a relevant eco-logical point         Elsie

Yes - thank you, Rhiannon. More on the way, apparently, but she's decided to stay put and take herself and the children into the downstairs toilet which is their 'safe' room with no outside walls.
