a wife to care,
a wife who will share,
and spare him from predatory mothers-in-law,
a friend to have fun with,
’til life’s days are done,
committed and fitted,
a pal to talk sense with,
won’t easily take offence
when he’s disgruntled, and awkward,
grumpy and grumbly,
upset, forgetful;
and she not edgily fretting,
or insidiously nagging,
will argue or soothe,
until both end up rueful and teased,
pleased to follies forget
and let bygones be bygone,
sorry when surly,
and early with gesture of ‘let’s make it up’
and hand in hand continue the journey
(frequent prayer to be fair,
for wisdom and help,
and apology),
not wasting their money,
when he’s gloomy, she’s sunny
(but not naively so),
being good parents,
good neighbours,
employers, grandparents
together,
encouraging each other
in a mind to be kind,
and serve,
offering a helping hand extended,
intended
to all,
from the start
