6 (?) to dinner

6 sitting down to dinner.
Grown-ups talking.
One child sulking.
Shouted loudly, rudely,
sent to her room awhile:
while unruly.

5 sitting down to dinner.
The other child played with her food
and said she didn’t like it –
it was not good.
‘You ate too much before’,
said Mum,
‘You’d better get down if you don’t want more.’

4 sitting down to dinner,
now they could talk more freely.
Call comes shrilly:
‘I need someone. I’m on the loo!’:
One parent goes to do
what needs to be done.

3 sitting down to dinner,
chatting seriously.
‘Awww!!! I’ve pinched my finger!’
Other parent doesn’t linger,
leaves quickly.

Grandparents remaining.
Conversation flags.
(They have plenty of other time to talk!
so peace and quiet momentarily)

but soon there were 3, then 4,
then 5 again:
and adult conversation interweaving
with child's acceptable-interruptions!
The mealtime doesn’t drag!

[Not exactly autobiographical!]

I found this poem of a family life around the dinner table you've created very amusing, it reminded me of moments from my past, sharing those mealtimes in large family gatherings.

I wonder how many families still sit around a table for meals? It is sad. It is part of ages old rituals an integral part of society and life. I know from when I lived alone, especially supper it felt so wierd and spooky on your own.

Thanks, Tom. Yes, it is such a way for families to keep the contact and know and understand each other and each other's problems. And as you say, children can feel isolated, needing that care and interest. Sad that it has begun to drop away so much. Rhiannon
