Corrupting Power

He broke the yoke of tyranny,
imposed himself as ruler,
“Benevolent to all”, he said,
but soon humility had fled.
The syndrome of corrupting power
when those around would cower
in fear of organising skills
that watched them every hour,
and soon expecting reverence,
his person held in awe:
they thought of life before –
oppression now much worse –
frustrations smoulder, soon erupt
– the syndrome’s fatal course.
Unless a Ruler serves his people’s good,
his rule is but a curse.

I like this poem. It seems
I like this poem. It seems very fitting at the moment, with the revelation of just how rotten and uncaring Putin has really become. Such a ruler appears to have lost touch with their original purpose, or the real needs of his nation and people! He almost no longer seems to know who his people are?
