Feelings or Facts?

Appealing bells,
sensuous incense,
awe-inspiring spires,
enchanting chanting
thrilling, enthralling:
surface magic and excitement;
high ceilings lift aloft,
thoughts drift,
mellow spirit glowing –
yet from these little learning,
that in the knowing
can gird the mind
when in the cold of daily grind,
groping, groaning, hurt and blind.

Relaxing, fragrant, ‘bubble-bath’,
escape awhile, refreshment –
perplexing thoughts
unreached, untouched
untaught, unsatisfied,

until

hear words of truth
– though these may not caress, allure,
they enter aural gate unlocking light
producing courage to endure
distress,
and satisfying mental sense,
intelligence.

there's much in this church that lives aurally, whether we see what we see on that we may not agree, but on bended knee all life is poetry.

I don't quite follow you, Celt. I wanted to compare enjoyment of enchantment to feelings and mood, with actual truth that answers spiritual questions. Rhiannon

I love your playing with words again - like enchanting chanting.

Churches often are awesome - and one can't help but think of the years of dedication that went into the design and build of them. But the humblest church if it has a kind and caring minister does the job for spiritual refreshment.

Thanks, Jean. It started off with the idea of the pealing of bells calling aappealingly in mind, and the rest gradually came to mind!

The awesomeness of building and effects on the senses has intention of drawing us to thoughts of God's greatness, and our smallness, and of worship due, I guess. Sometimes these things can be calming and steadying and peaceful, but sometimes can distract from listening out for God's words in scripture that show his welcoming arms in Jesus Christ, and the meaning of his death and resurrection. Which I suppose is why the church buildings I attend are very simple in architecture! Rhiannon
