Moss

(an allegory)
A rolling stone will gather no moss –
oh, what a loss, no coating of moss;
brushed and rubbed and scrubbed and worn,
no stillness for moss to take root and adorn,
it’s dry and sere and hard and grey
because it keeps rolling so quickly away;
but if it stops and comes to stay
in a sheltered spot for many a day,
a moist micro city can then commence
with symbiotical interdependence,
not just collecting muck and dross,
no, no, that soft and sheltering, beautiful moss;
maybe this stone would have liked to have travelled
and visit the places of life untrammelled
but its better off here though it didn’t criss-cross
the globe, but lay where it fell at a farmer’s toss
aware of a great experiential loss,
but gathering interesting, lively moss.

What a well constructed poem Rhiannon
What a well constructed poem Rhiannon, I was that rolling stone as a young man travelling with no thought of settling down. That all ended at the age of twenty seven as my stone settled down too married life. I can so relate my life to your poem Rhiannon.

Lovely tale and interesting
Lovely tale and interesting allegory, Rhiannon. I love moss, and the places where it grows. Playground of the faer folk.
I worked with a bloke called Pete Moss once. I don't think he was one for travel. Though I could be wrong.

Unusual poem, it works really well. As an admirer of moss I think you have done it justice, really love, 'moist micro city'. Moss is much underrated, close up, in the sunlight it's really beautiful.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
I can't say I am a big fan of moss, which has colelcted on the roof of my bungalow. The birds peck at it to get the bugs, and then it falls off the roof into the gutters or onto the paths, and makes a mess. But I don't mind the moss on the lawn or on the walls and some of it, as you say, is interesting and shows the variety of nature.

I love your idea you can travel in new lands even by staying still. Just change your point of view. It seems to me you have gathered much knowledge even so
