Nurture

A child unchecked in cheek,
or greed, or selfishness,
or one uncomforted in fear
or loneliness,
may live to be a hundred,
hampered,
hindered,
hardened,
handicapped in adulthood,
parenthood,
friendships,
relationships –
life-skills plundered
by those who blundered,
neglecting or unaware,
unsuspecting the value of such care.
The unfledged, untrained, untaught,
inexperienced, vulnerable, weak –
need curbing of their tempers, cheek,
but also warm affection,
nurture and protection:
the years beneath a loving wing
rich benefits will life-long bring.

Ooh, this is a wise one, Rhiannon. Thought-provoking and told with a light touch. It should be handed out to new parents on purse cards. ;-)

Hi Rhiannon,
Hi Rhiannon,
As one who admits to not doing a very good job as a mother, I enjoyed reading this. You give good advice, but it's a hard job.
