Shaken

Woke up this morning,
didn’t know the day,
didn’t know my name,
nor what to do or say …
so I went back to bed
to try to forget
that so much was forgotten
and wouldn’t fit, connect.
Woke up next morning
couldn’t see a thing
had to grope around,
and feel for everything;
trying to remember,
where, which way the door,
stubbing toe and knee-cap,
stumbling to the floor;
so I got back to bed –
for sleeping would hide
the lack of sight and horror,
but privately I cried.
Woke up so frightened,
couldn’t lift a leg,
couldn’t prance or dance
a tango or a jig;
feeling hungry, thirsty,
had to call and wait,
no longer could enjoy
an independent state;
so I lay back in bed
but misery there too –
I couldn’t wriggle properly
as I love to do.
Woke up come morning –
clang of my alarm,
my legs and eyes and mind
had not succumbed to harm,
jumped out of bed to look
upon the lovely view,
eyes glistening with tears,
assessing life anew:
couldn’t ever forget
the trouble, the plight
tasted in those mornings
of a long and dream-filled night.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
I should think this sort of dream would be common as we get older, and half expect to have problems when we wake. I often find my hands have gone to sleep, and I wonder if I've had a stroke.
Anyway, its a very good poem, and I like it a lot.

Hi there, Rhiannon. I 'got your drift' as they say, by the the time I had read a couple of stanzas. Amazing, all the seemingly little things we take for granted every day...us lucky ones at least.
The best of luck with the competition. A cracking entry.

I liked this, too Rhiannon.
I liked this, too Rhiannon. It made me feel sad and I also felt the relief at the end and gratitude.
