What goes in will emerge

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]

For out of the heart flowing into the mouth
come words that are healing, or spiteful, untruth,
and actions and will prompted kindly to live
concerned more for what can be done well and give
than new acquisitions to grasp and to get,
enjoy helpful duties, not glad to forget.
For heart guides the mouth, and the thoughts and the will –
important to censor what enters to fill

Through Eye-gate and Ear-gate my heart will be fed
some things stir up envy, make discontent spread
When God’s Holy Spirit comes there to indwell
true love, kindness, faithfulness he can instil
and teach, help us handle the way that we look
and what our ears put into memory’s book,
controlling our anger, vexation and pride,
encourage the better emotions inside.

Very true words Rhiannon, eloquently written with the rhythm of the heart. A sentiment which we need to remind ourselves of, perhaps now more than ever.

Interesting idea Rhiannon, it is not what comes in by the mouth but what goes out.

Must say the poem is quite complicated.

Thank you. Yes it is quite complicated I suppose. Hope you are getting on OK.

"What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unlcean', but what come out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unlcean'. (Matthew 15:11) and "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks …" (Matthew 12:34) And we do all need repentance and forgiveness, and to be taught how to store up there. Rhiannon

I was reminded of the words 'it's not what goes into the body... from the Gospels.  I like this piece. I can relate to it.
