When they wanted to drown the Ceiriog valley

Rural Wales has heavy rainfall
– for the cities far away
reservoirs were constructed,
valleys flooded, much dismay,
– now accepted, and their beauty
softens lingering regret;
but with opposition serious
one demand for such was met.
Demonstration, confrontation,
and Lloyd-George made strong protest:
for there did not seem substantial
need perceived for this request.
Ceiriog valley to be flooded
– taking W(ater) out of Wales –
(drowning villages), so that Warrington
could transform it into ales?
This extensive scheme was toppled.
“Little bit of heaven on earth”
said Lloyd-George of Ceiriog valley;
[– not for bringing beer forth!].
And despite short storm of thunder
that swung in when we arrived,
we enjoyed this quiet haven,
– not by ale of this deprived!

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
I enjoyed this poem very much - for the local history. How nice that one valley was saved by the polititians of the day. We had a similar problem in our district - many years ago - where a valley was flooded, destroying a small village in the process. They recently made a TV programme out of it, (I think it was called The Village) showing a less enlightened use of national power. But we do love to walk by the reservoir and that is where we get our very tasty water from.
