The shadowy shape of
a large pike
pursued swiftly
a family of
loons and heaved
boldly into the
weight of them-
shrieking sounds from
father were filled
with dread as both
chicks tumbled into
the water – from
the backs of
each scrambling
parent. Snapping jaws
ate one chick.
The day began with
a beaming sun
chasing clouds away
and now only one
chick remains
to ride momma’s
back and learn
the harshness of
Nature’s ways.
