Groundhog Morning

Heavy dew on the grass meant
sandals unable to fend
off moisture -- each blade
a rivulet
overcoming bare feet
watching with one eye closed
a blackbird -- more
like an undernourished crow
scanned my intentions.
I wished to resolve a neighbour’s
complaint -- an intruder
plucking the garden celery.
Green slats of growth not lasting
long with a snatcher
hanging around. Then I saw
a groundhog munching
amid thoughts of
sweat and fingernails
working hard to grow the stuff.
If only the groundhog could share
his thoughts on the issue.
