Four year old
Perry
has nothing to do.
Dad is working in the
garage.
Mom is sewing
and sister Raven is playing
with her dolls.
Baby brother Roman
Is sleeping.
Then visitors arrive
in a green car.
Maybe they came
to play
with Perry today?
Take a hat, Perry says
any hat
and slap it on your head.
He has red ones,
and blue ones
old ones and new ones
stacked high on the
shelf.
Some have pictures
on them, on trees
and deer and
fish.
A yellow one
shows off
its moose antlers.
Others have specs
of white from
seagulls
that fly high in the sky.
A few have a company name,
even dad’s
with colours and symbols
on front and back.
Here Uncle Dick, Perry says
this one is for you.
Now watch
it fly through the air
smacking
right on top of Uncle’s head.
And you too, Auntie
Esther
.
Then a cute
pink one turns round
and around
floating gently right
on top
of her head.
Soon, the room
is filled
with flying hats,
heading this way and that
looking
for someone’s head
to land on.
It becomes
a game for Perry.
And it’s called
“Find Someone’s Head”
for one of his
hats.
His hands send them
into outer space
and they travel around
looking
for a home
until…until
his shelf is bare!
Everyone looks astonished.
Hats and people
are scattered everywhere.
Mom and dad and Raven
and Uncle Dick and
Auntie Esther
and little brother Roman,
even grandma
Dorothy
look all around.
Everyone is covered
in hats.
Now each person is
laughing
and jiggling and
rolling on the
floor.
And that makes
Perry
very happy.
