From her wheel chair a whispering
creates its own little world
later she’ll remember he was here
a few hours, perhaps a week
Alzheimer’s deepening its root.
She’ll be gone soon from the
nursing home,
eyes fixated on an overhead light
green dress impacts the room
wheel chairs at attention
scratching her leg a routine.
Tummy seems full
dinner was – peas, no
chicken and – potatoes, little hunks
good too
and bread with dessert, ice cream
a cherry on top,
red like the setting sun
her head tilting, attentive
to one voice calling,
knowing she’ll be home soon.

Poignant, this, Richard, and beautifully written. Struck a chord with me.
