July 1st, Canada Day
As a flag salutes the breeze
children dance to
bandshell tunes, and pairs
do-se-do on the grassy
floor, others clapping from
blankets and chairs
and the swimming pool’s alive
with noise. Later ice
cream and painted faces
do create a good time in Truro,
Nova Scotia.
With Scottish cap and silver
beard, the singer lures
the crowd with
Atlantic tales, while
children munch cotton candy.
Arthritic couples and homemade
gas soon settle within an
arc of songs, happy
times continuing with fries
and bottled water, cars
parked nearby. The park
is afloat with laughter, and older
folks alive in memories.
