A League of Shadows

Nowhere is the pain of rain
unwelcome as at a family picnic
the preparation, shopping
making appointments with children.
For once
forget your friends we said,
this is family time
we intoned, penetrating
weathered shadows
for that silver lining we often
talk about.
Sandwiches are soggy
salad drenched
deserts scattered from the wind
and socks absorbing grass sponges.
Give in or race to shelter
is an option, so we stay and finish
the last of dry bites
then join a parade of laughter towards
a warm house and hot bath.

Hi Richard,
so it's not just the English weather that gets in the
way of play?
Thanks for sharing.
