A Lovely Day
By Richard L. Provencher

Tired shuffles toe-step along the
bus aisle with hard stares interrupted
by a shout of “Nice Day” to
someone sitting nearby
necks turning from day’s thoughts
until another exclamation
claims its space under the noise
of grinding gears, passengers
eager to disembark. “I say, those lawns
are lovely and green,” a mocking
voice some surmise knowing how
humid the day has been. “Got
to go now, have a nice evening”
launches himself from a seat in the middle
of the crowd, finally able to discern
who dares to thrust a little cheer
into the troubles of their draining hours
on the job. A silence quickly ensues
‘tock-tocking’ marking its way
as the man with a white cane carefully
makes his way between startled
passengers down stairs to the
sidewalk followed by muffled stares.
Past his crinkled eyes the sounds
of clapping follow his smile.
