Moving On
By Richard L. Provencher
- 1317 reads
He sought a new life away
from the toil of this
ranch and climbed a horse
prepared to move on
packed and ready to go
mom and dad arising soon
elder one liked to catch
morning’s breath –
better be off before words
worry him once more to stay
and talk it over.
His birthplace – where
cows awaited daily chores
he’ll miss them
chickens frantic for a
little attention
and his dog needing an
encouraging word
her health not so good
these days
sister Robin probably
sleeping away last
night’s tears.
He’s a man now. Wants to
tackle the world behind that
dip of sky far beyond
tractors and haying
and a farming good life
full of working man’s sweat.
Here they come – Sis
chasing their dog
followed by mom and dad.
Too late to go he thought
maybe they should talk again.
He got off his horse.
