Normandy Beach, a Beginning

Too many grim-faces from afar,
some 10,000 casualties that first day.

Finally, victory and marching, Paris
in love with General De Gaulle
women crowding streets,
kisses and flowers—a hunger for joy.

Then it continued, air battles
bombings and tanks
men fierce with pride.
the Manfried Line, revulsion of
mind and spirit, overcome.

At last, hug me my darlings
and celebrate VE Day.
