Prey to the Falling

We’re never far from the steps
of charity, with its independence and
moping about the house
without cash to flash and calls coming
in stampedes from bill collectors.
Not so long ago, the top of the hill
seemed to encourage,
to taste the fruit of success—
accepting the rule of self-preservation,
then the falling. How did it happen?
Heart attack? Greed?
Probably the latter, a scenery too full
and suddenly, the debt came calling.
