the reaping can begin
combines at the ready,
but not before pastures
received a planting
as sparrows fed their
young, accordion mouths
awaiting turns for food
and children preparing for
day’s adventure, now
ready. Cereal and toast
is the breakfast fare.
Bus at farm road’s edge
faces poking with curiosity
their friend exploding
from his house---books
and schoolbag flying.
Life abounds in the rain
and sun when a fire in the
soul turns us to the final
rung before proper harvest
takes place in our lives.
