Dress Senseless

I remember being told once that the best way to avoid being
intimidated by someone is to imagine them standing before you naked! I
don't know if it works - I've never tried it! It is, however, strange
how often the clothes people wear determines our perception of them.
This piece was inspired by one of the gentlest, most sensitive and
thoughtful men I know. He was a senior executive in the Gas
Board!
DRESS SENSELESS
The men in suits,
Yes, he was one of them,
Strutting,
Sighing,
Signing,
Smiling,
Stalking business
From shivering old ladies
And agents of the State
Who asked the price,
But never felt the cold.
Tough? Oh, yes!
But gentle be your sanction
Be it such
You would express,
And see the man,
No suit,
No harm,
No desk,
No car,
No less committed to a world
Of dreams
We all can share.
The suit,
The uniform,
The uniform,
How strange a word
For wrapping up a dream,
A hope,
A fear,
A love,
A passion so unique,
We must disguise
In pinstripe camouflage
The nature of ourselves
So all can see,
And understand,
Nothing.
