Tonight

I watch as the smoke from my cigarette spirals into the night sky. The shape of the cloud is manipulated by every single gentle touch of the wind. I lay on my back gazing at the stars; dreaming of the heavens and listening to the sounds of passing cars. The grass is soft underneath my back and it dampens my shirt with dew as I stare into the twilight, but I don’t mind. Shooting stars soar across the sky and I make some wishes to ease my mind. As time passes by I think of the signs, and imagine different ways to leave it all behind. I take another long, slow drag of this cancer, and let the toxins tell me lies; they are saying that everything will be alright.
Music begins to play from the pub across the street; I lie still on my hill and watch all of the people shuffle their feet. Laughter and chatter and the bar glass clatter mix with the joyful sounds of the music’s beat. I look at the smiling faces as they dance, the boys twirl their girls leading them on with their hands; they are holding on to each other so tightly saying, “Tonight, tonight, everything is going to be alright”.
I snuff out my cigarette and return my attention to the sky; the stars are out tonight brilliantly burning for miles and miles. There is a feeling in my chest that is constantly on the rise, it is welling up in inside; and it comes as no surprise. I’m thinking of the girl with the piercing blue eyes with dark curly hair and she wears no disguise. She is the perfectly genuine, spectacle of love; to me there is no other that I would ever be dreaming of. Her smile lights up the darkest pits in my soul, her laughter will fill your heart and make you whole; get close enough to this rare beauty and you’ll certainly know, that you’ll need to hold her and never let go. As I lay here pretending that the stars are her eyes, twinkling so bright in the midnight sky; I light another cigarette and instead of hearing lies, the truth comes pouring out with the smoke reaching for the sky. Tonight, tonight, everything will be alright.
