The idea of the USA having a single, domineering head of state for eight years at a time is rather antiquated and however potent the idea, it is not reflected in our reality any way. No; We want to delegate real authority to the Congress; to former US Presidents our wise men; and to other appropriate leaders so our American leadership is not only strong but also deep and democratic. So I view it as appropriate for former Presidents to have sensitive documents; but probably not in the volume Trump deported them from the White House. But if we're going to beware of threats to our American democracy, forgive my focus British friends, we should mind Jefferson and think of police tyranny and hyper-security as well. I am not of course calling for violence; but the situation is fraught and frustrations high.
