Zen Java, Zen Mind
"Make a cup of coffee", said the zen master to his disciple, "and bring
it to me."
"Once you've made it, the cup of coffee will thank you profusely. After
all, a cup of coffee is an exalted thing. Unlike you or I, he doesn't
have the illusion of a possible long life to steal nirvana from him.
No, no. A cup of cofee knows his destiny. He'll be drunk just moments
after he's made. His life force swells within him and then he's
dissolved into the universe or your stomach acids, however you choose
to look at it."
"And once you've made this cup of coffee, he'll be a good friend of
mine. He'll appreciate my causing him to be brought into existence and
more importantly, my having given him a meaning in life."
"You see a coffee cherry in a mountain jungle is barbarian,
unsophisticated, meaningless. But when the best cherries are selected,
roasted carefully with water, and then ground together into one, the
coffee is in a higher state. But still, the ground coffeee is
struggling to achieve its destiny, to become a cup of coffee, with
sugar and a coffeespoon, please. So make me that cup of coffee."
