Ernie the Devourer

Ernie the Devourer is a ravenous hungry beast,
He came upon our solar system and saw it as a feast.
He appeared from the darkness, opened a gaping maw,
And descended on our neighbourhood with ever chewing jaw.
Uranus was the first to go, it barely took a bite,
Before our most distant world, had disappeared from sight.
Next he slurped up Neptune, he found it rather nice,
It tasted like a pudding because it was made of ice.
Saturn was enormous, though it tasted rather sour,
But he ate it, rings and all, in less than half an hour.
Ernie was so hungry, he would not even share,
With his good friend Eric who had travelled with him there.
Before anyone could complain, say “stop, no more, hang on!”
He’d scurried on to Jupiter and Jupiter was gone!
Jupiter gave him gas, which propelled him on through space,
To crunchy orange Mars, which he found more to his taste.
He left the Earth untouched at first, but, no reason to rejoice,
He was just leaving best till last, well it was Ernie’s choice.
Venus was a gooey treat, it dribbled down his chin,
Mercury would be next, but could he fit it in?
Of course he could. He opened wide and Mercury was swallowed,
But the creature was still hungry and towards the Earth he wallowed.
Without even a second thought, it was just as we feared,
Ernie set upon the Earth, it simply disappeared.
Fortunately for the Earth and the Universe beyond,
The planets had been made of fruit, of which Ernie was quite fond.
A shadow fell across the beast, a child and mother glowered,
For it had been a science project that had been devoured.
And Ernie was a guinea pig who had an epic appetite,
And for his misdemeanour, he did not feel contrite.
And Ernie the Devourer was still a hungry beast!
