Because I wasn’t meant to be.
Because she pretended
I wasn’t really there.
Because they said they
were too young. Because
I didn’t feature in their plans.
Because she was from
a foster home. Because
of her religion...because his dad
beat the shit out of him, and
his mum.
Because she discharged herself
the night I arrived...thought
she might have a change
of heart – back in the swing
of things. Thought she might
pick up the pieces, fit them
together how they were before.
Because they said she’d learn
to bond with this precious gift
she’d been given; eventually.
Said the way she felt, then,
was normal, for some.
Because she asked for help
in the only way she knew how...
Because I tried, but couldn’t
convince her I was part of her,
part of him, of the whole, damn
shebang of that very first explosion...
something that happened against
all odds. Something needed love.
Because she didn’t know
what that was. Just,
because.

This is so sad, and sounds as though it's from the heart.
The repetition of 'because' is very good, making the excuses more telling.

Sad how one situation leads
Sad how one situation leads to another. And then the consequences don't seem at first glance to have much reason until you trace back. The little shoes are poignant. Interesting poem, Tina. One to think about.
