And so, my friend, the time has come
for a parting of the ways;
no journey lasts for ever
and end, it must, some day.
So all that’s left for me to do
is to quietly reminisce
to think about those times gone by
and the things that I shall miss.
You – leaning on the barbed-wire fence
at the top of your green hill –
your smile that always warmed my heart
despite a cold wind’s chill.
You – bringing me a tub of fruit,
you’d picked that very day,
blackberries you’d grown yourself,
‘I’ve a glut of them’, you’d say.
The sunflowers that you used to grow
that rose so very tall
those yellow faces peered at me
above the garden wall...
the bean-sticks you’d erect with pride
to support your hefty crop
the giant marrows that you raised
for our competition spot.
What I’ll really miss about you though
is those chats we used to share...
of cabbages, and kings and queens,
of the whys, the whens, the wheres;
the glass of sherry – Tesco’s best,
to these, all, I drink a toast...
until the day we meet again
on that long, and winding road.

Perfect to read at his
Perfect to read at his funeral. Just a thought - in the last verse, the word 'share' appears twice, wondered if another might work better in place of one of them and still rhyme...

A warm and kind tribute to your neighbour Tina. It sure sounds like you shared some wonderful memories.
I also agree with Bee, it does have a song about it too.

What a sad and gentle read sand lady. Perhaps the daughter could read it her mum. I'm sure it would be much appreciated
