The time of year when the earth
is created again, one piece at a time,
with a frenzied frisson of wings;
starlings wheel – a flight of them,
yet moving as one in perfect unison.
 
A thin, black scarf – binding winding
round milky breasts of scalloped hills
until...in a blink of an eye – it morphs
to a distant constellation, stippling 
a misted, mackerel sky – succumbing 
to nothingness at the horizon.  
 
A disinterested moon gazes down;
changes her white dress for silver, 
knowing such guilty pleasures
as these...snatched on the wing – but
fleeting, as with any living thing...
 
A tenderness of dew drips from the trees,
as a light breeze whispers of an epiphany;
the early light – querulous as shot silk,
filters through the scrim 
of matted branches.
 
Morning breaks; Mother Nature set
for another costume change.  The weather
puts itself in the wind’s wide hands as blue tits 
forage for food; small hankerings, quiver 
like azure flames. 
 
Feathered missives amidst a promise 
of greenness and the coming of
those darling buds of May, god willing
pretty soon, will take centre stage...
 
but for now – two hares boxing
at the top of the hill will have to do...
ears – bristling...stiff as  the nipples
of an early bather in a chill, north sea.
 
Bolt upright, they sit...those ears, again...
planning a next move, then they’re off
like a shot...over the hill and far away.
Hope spring doesn’t follow suit.
