Woman in Blue

You glimpse her from a window,
merely for a second, out in her backyard,
wrapped in a winter-jasmine wind...a shabby
tenement block, red framed behind her,
like a painting by Degas...pinkly
shimmering in the mist.
Waif-like...sublimely unaware – reaching
for a twig of corkscrew hazel, sadly –
way beyond her reach, but still her arms
stretch upwards to the sky, as if to float,
to fly, far from foggy Camden Town,
railway lines, graffiti-riddled bridges,
wheelchairs, and things.

The cameo from the window,
The cameo from the window, perfectly executed.
I can follow, if not emulate, the choice of words to describe the urban backyard setting- but then the "corkscrew hazel"- where did that come from? I would love to learn how.
