Soho steams tonight...
and he is the strip joints,
the taxis and the tourists...
the kerb-crawler and the pigs,
the bouncers and the pimps...
And the hand-job lot
are already on the make;
pavements are heaving.
Yet, right this minute,
nothing can come between
him and his plate of eels
and mash – his sketch-pad
and pencil, and that hooker
giving him the ‘come-on’,
and the sweet sting of rain
on her naked shoulder.

Hi, Tina. I've read this poem a few times now. I like that its about an artist and is itself a
poetic sketch.
It reminds me of Jazz poetry or the opening paragraph to some gritty detective novel. I can imagine hearing a bluesy saxophone being played as I read it.
Yet it's also very English with its Mash and Jellied Eels which I also like.
Much enjoyed.

Hi Tina,
The artist with his sketch pad, ready to capture
a piece of night life.
you really got everything about Soho into this
poem, I could picture the scene so well.
Great read.

Hi Tina,
you gave me a laugh with your comment about the
webbed feet.
I can't believe we're in a drought here where I
live, with all this rain, it's mad.
Jenny.

I always adore your shorter poems, Tina, and this one is no exception - raw, gritty, but still the beauty shines through. Well done!

And here was me thinking
And here was me thinking what a lovely girl you are. How could you possibly put something like that in your mouth, that's disgusting :-) Eels, yeuk!
It's funny the eels reference and the obvious locating of it in Soho makes it, as well wisher said, so typically British, but without those two references it could just as easily have been in Amsterdam, or the Alexandra Platz red light district of Berlin, or probably any other area such in any other city.
Despite being British to the point of bulldogs it also had a really cosmopolitan feel to it. Lovely.
