The electronic sounds of dance music played out, as Luke moved around, on the dance floor, he had been lusting after this dark haired beauty that was swaying lithely. He moved in on her, she seemed to be in a world of her own.
She turned around to face him and smiled, Luke was just about to ask her to dance, when one of his mates tapped him on the shoulder, it was Sam from the training centre.
“YOU COMING BACK TO THE TABLE FOR A DRINK BIRTHDAY BOY?” Sam shouted, trying to get himself heard above the music.
“YEAH! I'll BE THERE, JUST AS SOON AS THIS TRACK'S FINISHED!” Luke yelled back, not wanting to loose this girl's attention.
“SO WHAT YOU DRINKING THIS TIME? Sam enquired.
Luke decided to stick on the same drink he'd been on all night. “I'LL HAVE ANOTHER COCKTAIL, THE SAME AS BEFORE!”
Luke had resolved himself to the fact he was on a night out with his training mates, so although he fancied this girl like mad, he decided he'd have one dance, then go back to the table.
He had just turned eighteen, and was following in his father's footsteps, training to become a pilot, though he hadn't actually got his licence yet. He hoped it wouldn't be too long, as his father had promised to take him on a flight in one of the crystal ships, once he had passed his training. Luke was desperate for some adventure, and yearned to go flying through the galaxies, searching for other worlds.
The girl was still swaying to the sounds, when the track finished, he said to her, “May be I'll see you around?”
The girl didn't really answer, but just shrugged, leaving Luke under the impression she wasn't interested. So he smiled and made his way back to the table.
“Here he comes! The birthday boy's arrived, how does it feel to be finally a man?”
Luke wasn't really a drinker, he knew his career was more important, he didn't want anything to stand in the way. He decided he would drink tonight, then that would be it.
“Can't say I feel any different than I did yesterday, to be honest.” He took a sip of the cocktail, which was called a tropical experience, it had fruits that the people of Obsidian had learnt how to grow in their heated gardens, but with some wine and other alcoholic concoctions, it became quite strong.
Luke wasn't sure he was really enjoying this experience, but went along with the others, prepared to make the effort, if only for their sakes.
“Hey that girl wasn't half bad looking, was she?” Luke turned around to see if he could see her, she was still on the dance floor, but she was chatting with some girls and a couple of blokes.
“Did you get her name and number?” asked Jake, another of his mates.
“Na! She's too classy for me, she'd probably eat me for dinner.” Replied Luke. “Talking of which...I hope we're going for some food later.”
Sam patted Luke on the back, saying...”Look I know she's probably older than you, but you know what they say about older women!” They all laughed, then Sam turned to Luke.
“Hey did you hear about the new food place that's opened up, it's close to Brecon Hall. They do some amazing local cuisine, we should go there tonight, what do you think Luke?”
“I think that's a great idea, you know I'm not really into all this drinking lark, I've got to watch myself if I'm to become a pilot. I certainly don't want to end up getting reprogrammed.”
“Oh come on!” said Sam. “It's not like your eighteen everyday.”
“I know, but it's also not really my thing, feeling the worse for wear.”
The girl appeared from nowhere and standing behind Luke, she played with his hair. “Hey lover boy...you fancy another dance?”
Luke couldn't believe his luck, “Yeah! Sure...by the way what's your name?”
“April,” she said smiling again.
“Well I think you should give the birthday boy a dance, go on Luke.” said Sam.
“Ah! So it's your birthday...then I think we should go and dance right now, so I can get to know you better.”
They both hit the floor, Luke had never felt so good, it seemed she actually did fancy him.
“Look...I'm going with my mates for a meal, but do you fancy meeting up some time?”
“Yeah! Sure,” replied April.
Luke was just making his way back to his mates table, when the barman approached him.
“Excuse me...is your name Luke Mayall?”
“Yeah! Why?”
“I have some bad news for you...the hospital rang, your mother has been rushed in.”
Luke stood stunned and suddenly couldn't figure out what was going on. Without even telling his mates where he was going, he rushed out of the nightclub.

Who me I thought I was a piece of space junk, lol, keep writing I'll keep reading, by the way I can relate to Luke's mother health issue my wife had gastric bypass some years ago and a two years ago I passed out in the barber chair from dehydration so your characters weight and health issues rings quite true and close to home for me, makes for really good fantasy. The reader has to enter the story through the characters if not it's quite sterile, Ray
