First Cut

Dear diary...17th March 2020.
Body's gone into battle,
head engulfed in what
feels like swampy moss,
becoming clogged
among this chaotic scene,
like a lawnmower possessed;
grinding through first
cuttings of spring,
texture of sinewy grass
Celtic knotting...tangled
in my throat,
each blade hostile
with no compassion,
no longer lurking in shadows,
but lying as if in thick molasses
forever creeping.
But I won't let it win! No,
this coughing rage
reminding me of
smoke from bonfire,
lungs caught in loathsome
wreak of destruction clawing
its way, causing hundreds of
bacteria to incubate,
so! I won't feel guilty
about not being industrious,
I'll give into languor induced
by weakness.
Beneath quilt I feel like
an undercover agent,
only surfacing for air for a moment
then surrendering to watery eyes.
Every moment I can sleep,
feels like serenity washing
over my independent spirit
that hates relying on others,
surrendering I don't want to
venture far, it's reminding me
that as I gaze out my window,
this can only make me stronger in the end.

Oh, Jenny, you sound so ill,
Oh, Jenny, you sound so ill, but as usual have a fine ability to describe your sufferings. Glad you can sleep, and hope you're being looked after. My husband has had a mild throat/chest, but it means I have to keep isolated for the fortnight to see if I catch anything, whatever it is. Hope you feel much better soon. love, Rhiannon

I'm glad you're being well
I'm glad you're being well looked after. Yes, terrible times for lots of people at the moment, I think I am one of the lucky ones as I'm ok, at home with the cat and not venturing out unless I need to and that I have a garden to poke about in. Hope you're feeling a little better today and feel a bit more independent. Rachel x

Your descriptions of the
Your descriptions of the symptoms are so graphic I feel ill reading this and it's taken me back to when I had proper flu nine years ago. I really hope you're feeling a bit better now. We're all told to stay at home but I've been working. Luckily I feel well but there will be people out there who are ill but still work for fear of losing their jobs despite promises from the government. When you finally feel well you will be really be able to appreciate that sense of wellbeing once again. Look after yourself.

Trust you to find such a wonderful unusual metaphor, even when you are ill your imagination shines through! But so does your skill in communicating, so I felt all the horrible symptoms. I hope so much that you are getting on the top of the illness now, and finding your strength! Thinking of you XXX

Oh good, it sounds like you
Oh good, it sounds like you managed to get a longer sleep at last and ate a meal. Yes, I hope that people don't forget about all of the lessons they might have learnt when this passes too. And of course, you are in everyone's thoughts, you are so kind to everyone here that it is your kindness rebounding. Hope it's all uphill with more sleep and food into tomorrow. Rachel x

I'm so HAPPY you a feeling a little better :0) What Rachel says is true. Everyone brings their own qualities to ABC but your kindness and goodness and magic with words is the most precious thing!
I am dreading getting ill, and my partner and son, too. It is so good to read your account of getting through, even when you are struggling you give me hope

So glad to hear you're feeling better, Jenny. I'm sure the writing thoughts will start coming soon. It is really beautiful weather where I am, which lifts my spirits even in these peculiar times. The world goes on, and will do, and we'll get through all this.

Hi Jenny,
Hi Jenny,
I was shocked to see this. I hope you are on the way to recovery now. It must be sobering getting this terrible virus. Great poem though, I felt the terror of the entangling moss and grass and the wonderful liberating feeling of getting through in the end.

Hi Jenny,
Hi Jenny,
You must be careful and not go out too soon. It is a terrible virus and you are lucky to have got through. I know what you mean about being afraid of coughing, in case people treat you like a plague victim!!! They might even run away. I hope everythiong will go alright for you and as the weather improves so maybe will your delicate health. My own family and myself remain in good health for the moment.
Bye,
Hilary
